Eataly Distribuzione and SIGNA Retail are launching a joint venture to introduce the successful Eataly concept in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. In the first step, Eataly and SIGNA will become shareholders of Eataly Distribution Deutschland GmbH.
Eataly now operates 26 locations in the USA, Brazil, Dubai, Japan, South Korea, Turkey and Italy and is one of the fastest-growing and most successful catering and retail companies in the world. More locations are added every year. Last year, Eataly generated sales of roughly EUR 400 million.
The newly established partnership between SIGNA Retail and Eataly incorporates the different areas of expertise of the companies involved, with Eataly providing goods, the marketing concept and specialist training while SIGNA will contribute its catering systems expertise on the German market (Le Buffet), its organisation and systems (Karstadt Warenhaus) and its real estate expertise in the three countries mentioned above.
The first location, opening at the end of the year, will be an Eataly flagship store in the Schrannenhalle building right by the Viktualienmarkt in central Munich. Further locations are currently being examined.
Dr Stephan Fanderl, Karstadt CEO and Managing Director of SIGNA Retail, comments, “Eataly is the most exciting food concept in Europe right now. We will now bring it to Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. Our joint venture provides for a business plan with further expansion to at least five locations by 2021. We can implement Eataly as an overall concept, as in our initial project in Munich. In addition, we will look into whether individual elements of Eataly’s concept can be implemented in smaller areas. Both the augmentation of our LeBuffet formats and the conversion of LeBuffet areas into Eataly stores are being examined for the KaDeWe Group and Karstadt Warenhaus in this context.”
Luca Baffigo Filangieri, Eataly CEO, comments, “Munich will be our first opening in Europe after Japan, USA, Turkey, Dubai, Brazil and South Korea. As the people of Munich say ‘Munich is the Northernmost Italian city’, Germans love Italian food, like Ital-ians love German cars: passion for quality: this is why Munich is will be the location for our first shop in Europe. We are bringing to Schrannenhalle the best Eataly has to offer, high quality Italian products and our ‘saper fare’ or ‘know how’. Eataly Munich will consist of a market, restaurants, school and production of Italian food. When we open outside of Italy, we choose the best local partner, in Germany we had the chance to present our project to SIGNA and Karstadt, serious and trustworthy companies with incredible commitment for quality and customer experience; we are confident that we have chosen the best partner for our openings in Germany and more.”
The completion of the joint venture is subject to the approval of the competition authorities.
