New benchmark for seamless transition between in-store and online offering
From 2019, Karstadt will delight its customers in Berlin-Tegel with a new department store that has been customised as a networked marketplace and precisely aligned to local requirements.
At the laying of the foundation stone of the new store on 8 June, Karstadt CEO Dr Stephan Fanderl remarked: “We will considerably enhance our store type for Berlin-Tegel, because we are creating the unique shopping experience of a networked marketplace here: a product range individually tailored to the location where the offering of in-store and online items grow together in the closest way. Our customers will be able not only to look at, try on and buy the items in our new store, but also access the entire product world of Karstadt and many of its partners. In Berlin-Tegel, we are joining everything together that we have learned and tried out in the digital world until now. The special aspect of this is that we can align this store to this precisely.”
The new Karstadt store in the Gorkistrasse pedestrian zone will cover around 9,000 square metres on four storeys. The store range, like in all Karstadt stores, will be linked with online retail. For example, “Click&Collect” allows customers to order at the store with no shipping costs, collect their desired items there and also return online orders there. Or “Click&Reserve” gives them the option of making an online reservation at the store and then collecting and looking at the item there. If a desired item is sold out in the store, it can be ordered directly in the department store and delivered to a desired location. And, if desired, customers can have items purchased in the store delivered conveniently to their home.
In addition to the department store in Tegel, the opening of a new Karstadt store in the south of Berlin is already planned for October 2018. A networked marketplace with approximately 7,900 square metres of sales space on three storeys is being created in the Gropius Passagen.
The two new department stores will solidify the Karstadt store network with the existing seven Berlin department stores and thus sustainably strengthen the company’s market position in the metropolis.
